I am 21 years old and
I have had diabetes since I was 15 months old. I know that healing
time
will be slower, but my question is, I read that you are not allowed
to eat before and after the
procedure. This will be a complication with me, what should I
do?
Maeghan
Dear
Maeghan
Breast augmentation is certainly possible in patients
with diabetes with only minimal extra risk.
Your operation should be performed by a plastic surgeon at a hospital
where your blood sugar can
be carefully monitored before and after surgery. Your surgeon will
probably arrange for you to be
seen by the anesthetist or another medical specialist before surgery
to help manage your blood
sugar. In our practice we place patients with diabetes first on our
list so they can have the operation
first thing in the morning. They are usually given half their normal
dose of insulin which is about right
if they have skipped breakfast.
After surgery their blood sugars are carefully monitored
and they are given the appropriate dose
of insulin as required. We have used this technique in many cases
of diabetec patients undergoing
breast augmentation surgery and their operations have gone extremely
smoothly. Dr. Frank Lista M.D., F.R.C.S.C www.theplasticsurgeryclinic.com Click
