Dr. Bill Papanastasiou, MD,CM,MSc ,FRCSC is one of Canada’s leading plastic surgeons, specializing in aesthetic breast surgery,body contouring and facial surgery. Board certified in 1986, he has been practicing plastic surgery in Montreal since that time. He is a recognized leader in the use of cohesive gel filled and saline implants for breast augmentation surgery. He is frequently asked to lecture at international conferences and to mentor other plastic surgeons eager to learn from his latest techniques.
Breast implants have been in use for over 60 years. Studies have now clearly demonstrated that silicone gel implants are not only perfectly safe but, as well, the most perfectly designed implants from an esthetic point of view.
Up until a few years ago, the only option available to women was the use of saline implants. The one advantage in using these was the fact that the operation could be done with the use of an endoscope, which requires a very small incision in the underarm thereby minimizing the scars.
The new generation of silicone implants, called cohesive gel implants have an excellent track record. The most commonly used style is the “tear drop” one which gives the breast the most natural esthetic appearance as opposed to round implants which tend to give a rounder “operated” appearance.
The vast majority of our patients are now opting for the cohesive gel implants. Only about 5% of our patients decide to use saline implants. The decision to opt for either implant should be taken conjointly between the patient and Dr. Papanastasiou, depending on the patient’s chest anatomy and thickness of tissues.
Dr. Papanastasiou is a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Canadian Society for Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Plastic Surgery. Dr. Papanastasiou graduated from McGill University and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Plastic Surgery.
