I am 29 years old and have had Crohn's disease for 10 years. Over time, weight loss and
frequent doses of Prednisone have had a DEVASTATING effect on my breasts. I want to have
breast augmentation surgery, but do not know if this disease and the medication that I am
presently taking, make it impossible. I have been on Purinethol for 6 years, and am now on a 10
month long treatment with Entocort.
Is it safe for someone with an auto-immune disease to have this surgery done?
Does this mean that my body would reject the implants?
Josie

Dear Josie,
I will begin by explaining for other readers that Crohn's
is a disease in which the intestinal tract and other
tissues become inflamed, and treatment includes
the use of steroids (eg. prednisone, Entocort) and
immunosuppressants (eg. Purinethol) to suppress
the inflammation. Steroids in particular can cause
skin to lose its tone and your breasts to sag. I have
performed breast augmentation in a patient with
Crohn's disease (in remission), with excellent results
still four years later.

I do not believe that you are at particular risk for rejecting your implants due to Crohn's disease.
You are however at much greater risk of wound healing problems and wound infection because of
the immunosuppressant medications you are on, and I believe breast augmentation with an implant
would not be advisable.
You are more likely to benefit from a mastopexy (breast lift). This would involve removing the sagging
breast skin and surgically re-shaping your breasts to a more beautiful appearance. Your breasts
would also appear to be larger because they would be lifted to a normal position (see above for
example of a typical result).
Good luck, Josie.
