What is the most common
complication after breast augmentation surgery?
Sarah
Dear Sarah,
Fortunately, complications following breast augmentation
surgery are rare. Probably the most
common complication is temporary loss of sensation in certain
areas of the breast, including the
nipple. Approximately one third of patients undergoing breast
augmentation will have a temporary
loss of sensation on small areas of the breast. In most patients,
the sensation returns within two to
three months. In a small percentage of patients, there can be
areas of permanent numbness
following surgery.
Other complications include infection, hematoma, interference
with breast feeding, leaking of the
implant, hardening of the scar tissue around the implant, interference
with mammography and
shifting or malposition of the implant. It is important to have
a thorough discussion with your plastic
surgeon about potential risks and complications of breast augmentation
surgery before deciding
to proceed.
