Dear BM
The question is one that can only be answered in a
very general way. Revisional breast surgery
following breast augmentation is actually more common than many
think. The type of surgery needed
to improve your situation may be relatively simple or quite complex.
Most Plastic Surgeons doing
more than a few augmentations each month will be more than qualified
to help you.
All breasts continue to change after breast augmentation
surgery and it is rare to have both breasts
change equally over time. Stretching of the breast tissue and thinning
out of the tissue thickness
occurs in all women and this can create asymmetry, sagging,"bottoming
out", falling off to the sides,
more visible implant edges and ripples, etc. In addition, scar tissue
forms around all breast implants
and once again this can happen to a different degree in each breast.
Scar tissue is capable of
changing the appearance/shape of each breast or limiting their normal
movement. These undesirable
changes are always amenable to corrective surgery but the results
of this surgery are often
unpredictable.
The cost of these surgeries are often as much or more
than the cost of primary augmentation. In
most cases, I would recommend replacing implants more than 10 years
old at the time of revisional
surgery. This clearly adds to the costs depending on the type of
implant chosen. All of these issues
should be discussed and clarified for you at the time of a consultation
with an experienced Plastic
Surgeon. This will allow you to make a decision if the costs and
risks of further surgery are worth the
opportunity to restore a better breast shape
