Dear Franca
Thank-you for your email. Fat injection into the breasts
is a discredited procedure that should never
be undertaken. That is not only my view but also that of most Plastic
Surgeons and our professional
associations. The reasons for this are multiple but the most important
is that injected fat can create
what are called micro-calcifications, i.e. tiny deposits
of calcium crystals within the breast tissue.
While these are not dangerous per se, when seen on a mammogram they
are very difficult to
differentiate from the micro-calcifications that are associated
with breast cancer. Therefore, a woman
who has had fat injections into her breasts will always have to
worry about whether the lesions that
show up on her mammogram are caused by the injections or are in
fact a sign of cancer. Her doctor
would also be in the difficult position of deciding whether or not
to do a biopsy or an even more
extensive surgery each time one of these micro-calcifications shows
up on the mammogram. In
comparison, breast augmentations using implants do not interfere
with mammograms or breast
cancer screening.
